Old (New Old Stock) Reeds - Usable?

I'll just chime in and say that I used new, old stock, Vandoren baritone saxophone reeds until I ran out. I didn't have any problems with them.

    I'm not dead, yet.

A techie friend asked me, a little while ago, what's the oldest computer I have. Up until recently, I had a Macintosh Plus. That'd be late 80s. I'm pretty sure I have a Macbook Core 2 Duo stashed someplace. That'd be around 2007.

Macintosh SE/30 for me. In a backpack. 19.5 lbs.

    Siegfried Wolfram

BarrySachs is correct. Helen has a bunch of info on her website, but her blog is down. However, she has an article on the Wolfram horns at https://bassic-sax.info/version5/vintage-saxes/european-made-saxes/wolfram. I've also saved the page into the Internet Archive, in case the link dies...

I'm actually typing this with my forefingers. It does not work very well.

    I completely agree.

    Yanagisawa identify

Yup. All the stuff on my old saxpics.com website hasn't been updated in 15 years or so, after I sold it. Something like that. Don't use the serial numbers listed there. Check https://www.woodwindforum.com/forum/index.php?forums/yanagisawa.1161. Pics? Go to...

    Peter Schickele

My favorite composer of modern classical music, PDQ Bach historian, and the host of Schickele Mix died on January 16, 2024 at age 88. There's a nice interview with him from 1985 here.

    I'm not dead, yet.

However, that may be re-evaluated in the near future. I took a few months off because I've been and still am studying for some certifications (I'm a computer security guy). Work has also gotten VERY busy, my family was sick, I still am sick, and my big, white doggie has something that the vets...

    Oboe Keypad chart wanted

I'll first mention this for just the thumbplate and the tone holes it closes. That might be what you want. Or, maybe, something like this? That <-- is an oboe patent from Marigaux and it's pretty detailed. I did a couple other searches and there are a ton of oboe patents out there, so this...

    Paetzold-by-Kunath (Square Basses)

One of my favorite musicians is St. Vincent. On one of her earlier songs, Marrow, off the top of my head, but one of the backup folks plays tenor sax and I'm pretty sure that the player has an older Selmer professional horn. It clicks and clacks enough that it seriously distracts me. There's...

Question about Treble and Descant Recorder fingerings

    a. Because it's more of a pain when you don't do the transposition. b. Because nobody wants to buy 12 flutes to be able to play "the same fingering" for each key.

    Paetzold-by-Kunath (Square Basses)

These have an incredibly interesting sound. However, in the videos I watched, the clicking from the keywork was louder than the notes it was playing :D. Looks like they're popular. I saw a few YouTube videos. There are definitely English-speaking players.

    3D Printed Instruments

This just appeared in my YouTube feed, so I had to subscribe. The YouTuber has made the following 3D things: * Bass oboe (Heckelphone) * Bass clarinet in G * A natural "piccolo" clarinet * Regular Bb clarinet, but you have to provide the keywork ... And a few non 3d-printed things, like an...

    New but old Clarinet!

One other thing. While I have no problem if all you want to do is kick back and play a bit of clarinet, like Ferris Bueller (See? I'm old), it is very difficult to unlearn bad habits. Do a bit of research and see if there's an instructor in your area. This should be easy to do if there's a...

    New but old Clarinet!

"Grenadilla." Just wanted to mention this to OP because "wooden clarinet" doesn't automatically = "old", but OP may have read that grenadilla is becoming rare. Rubber, plastic, and various metals also don't necessarily mean that the horn is old. "Old" also doesn't mean "vintage". Per Tony's...

    Octo-Contrabass Saxophone (Completely Theoretical)

I agree with a lot of what Helen said. There's no reason to create an instrument that sounds notes to the extreme lower or higher end of human hearing. That being said, everyone needs a hobby. You'd probably need a combination of a large bore and multiple twists. Instead of long keys...
