What to Make of the Serial Number Lists

https://www.woodwindforum.com/forum/index.php?threads/serial-number-and-model-listing.20851/ Really just a longer version of what Steve said.

    Antique or...what?

You have a reduced keywork (well, vs. modern Albert system horns) Albert system clarinet. There are some manufacturers that still make Albert clarinets, but with more keywork. That case, though, is pretty ancient and was probably purchased at the same time the horn was. Mind you, I'm not...

Beginning clarinet again as an adult

If you don't mind ebay, there are lots of pro models there that are extra cheap. Just make sure you include the cost of an overhaul in the price. The YCL-3XX (where X is a number) is marketed as an intermediate model. The YCL-2XX (where X is a number) is the student model. Get a nice...

    Oboe Identification

Looks like the pads and corks need some attention. If there's a good repair shop near you, you could ask to have the horn looked at and get an estimate for "playing condition" or "overhaul." If it's a really good shop, ask for a value estimate. I'm definitely not the person to help on oboe...

    Terry Stibal

I placed the footnote years ago. SOTSDO was very active on this forum, so I wanted to make sure that other posters knew. In memory of SOTSDO, please burn an alto clarinet in his name. He would have wanted that.

Hammerschmidt Bb Bass Clarinet in Maple

I've mentioned elsewhere that the hard rubber or plastic student Vitos basses from, well, a long time ago, were good enough that I remember. Just no low C. I've owned and borrowed some high $ horns. However, the two horns that I've had stolen were low $ horns. One was an Amati tenor and the...

Hammerschmidt Bb Bass Clarinet in Maple

From what I can put together, based on https://clarinetpages.info/smf/index.php?topic=1532.0 is that maple is softer, lighter, and less dense than grenadilla. The reason that the bassoon family uses maple is because big hunks of grenadilla are difficult to find, whereas big hunks of maple are...

A cheaper alternative to the Vandoren B40 for a chalumeau

Looks that way, although one website I went by had mouthpieces that were "designed for" chalumeau. I think OP is looking for a mouthpiece that's halfway decent and is under the price of an OK chalumeau set, i.e. under $40 US.

Someone needs to tell Amati to work on their naming conventions

Amati has a long and varied history, even if you're just talking saxophones. That's a topic for another day. I assume that the model name is referring to "Amati Straight Soprano" and Amati never hired anyone to check to see if the abbreviation might mean something else in another country. Or...

    Merano vs Medini Alto Saxaphone?

I've seen that low C key before. It's similar to the Selmer Prelude or Axos, I think. I can't see the altissimo F# key, if it has one. I haven't really paid much attention to Chinese or Taiwanese (I think I can now throw in Vietnamese and Indonesian) saxophones in years. I don't know how...

getting a B-flat contra. Paperclip, resonite, or wood?

I've only played the Leblanc Bb contra paperclip, with a range down to low C. I had some difficulties with the mechanism when I went really low, because it'd keep getting knocked out of adjustment. I don't know if that's a "me" problem or "everyone" problem. Michael Lowenstern, at...

    Spring size I need

Standard warning: they're called "needle springs" for a good reason. I agree with Gandalfe. He saves me lots of money and time. More seriously, he's got a good recommendation. Check out https://napbirt.org and see if there's a tech near you.
