I'm not sure this is the right forum for this type of question, but -- how can you tell a small crack inside the bore of a wooden instrument from, say, a healthy fibre pattern? I tried googling for images of various cracks, but couldn't find any.

I'm about to buy a used oboe, and its silver-plated keys are quite black -- I guess no one cleaned them for a long while. How can I clean them? Can I do it myself, or should I seek professional help? Can it be done without disassembling the keys altogether (I certainly won't try THAT on my own...
