In this short video, David Watkin gives a brief introduction to baroque dynamics, beginning with dynamic variety -- loud-soft. Those instruments such as the cembalo that are not capable of dynamic variation tend mainly to rely on "long-short" (agogic expression). I would add that the recorder falls between these two -- relying, in its much more limited dynamic range on a combination of both.
