> Given what I require in computing ...
That's really the number 1 question. The reason why I can get along with my iPad is because I have three desktop computers. I can do all my high-powered stuff on my desktop(s) and if I just want to go mobile for a bit, I could take the iPad. It's a nice little gaming device that will keep my 7-year-old occupied on the flight to MI this summer.
What you'd rather have, Franklin, is a desktop
replacement. There are laptops out there that can do that, but they're pricey.
Most of the people I work for/with don't need anything more powerful than a Pentium D. That's three processor "lives" and about six years ago. In other words, a computer equivalent to the last Dell Optiplex GX620s and the early
Optiplex 745s. My local library has better computers than this. And they sell for around $100 on eBay. Y'know, they could easily use something earlier if they didn't "have to have" Office 2007.
The computer I have at home is an older Intel i7 that runs at 2.67ghz. I've had it for almost three years. The ONLY program that I use that really can use all the horsepower I've got is GIMP, the freeware Adobe Photoshop alternative. And I don't use it on a daily basis.
In other words, you want
this. And get them to replace the hard drives with a couple SSDs. Except I hate Toshibas. I wouldn't turn one of these down, if someone wants to buy me one, but I don't like 'em. And for $1900, I can easily build a much faster desktop with better gizmos. And a larger monitor.
