To oil bore, or bored of oil?

I have read conflicting views on bore oiling wooden/composite horns. IS it best to oil the bore only after cleaning with soap/water? Or is this something that should be done more regularly? Also, what bore oil do you use? I have used Dr. Ducks ax wax for YEARS for unfinished wood. Theur web site also recomends it for woodwinds. As I have a lot of it, I was planning on using it. Any problems with that idea?

I actually never clean with soap and water.

Oil in the wood is used to keep water out. To me, to put water ON before I oil it to keep water OUT is kinda contradictory.

But to each their own.

I also wax the body during a normal cleaning and polishing phase. But that is different from oiling.

Good info. Thanks. This is the product I am used to using on unfinished wood on guitars. It works for cleaning also. Do you have any experience with it for woodwinds? Seems like a good choice as it does clean, as well as seal well.

that product cleans, seals and polishes.

I would think it would be used after oiling.

Thus two different processes.

The product really is not descriptive enough in it's contents to really know. It includes brass and woodwinds (the keywork or the wood?) ... but what does it bring to brass ?? other than it also has ingredients which prevent fret oxidation. and would you want that unknown ingredient on your clarinet ?

Over on the clarinet bboard they are very particular about oiling and polishing products. But everyone has a favorite. If it ain't gonna kill you then it's okay in a sense.
