Yup, Matt aka QuinnTheEskimo, the ultimate GAS enabler has struck again:

"This is an EXTREMELY RARE Keilwerth Toneking 3000 Jazzophone. The jazzophone is a bit of an odd duck-it’s a trumpet but is wrapped like a saxophone. Looks really funky and cool and sounds great, though you can't use mutes with it. In over 10 years of dealing in vintage instruments I've never seen another one of these in person. Horn looks good with some lacquer wear (see pics). Valves are excellent and this great horn plays well as is."

I hope to video it in action next month at the Microsoft Jazz Band concert.

interesting. Kinda looks like a double french horn lead pipe on a trumpet with a reworked bell.

Congrats! Looks like something Eddie Harris would have been all over if he had known they existed.

Sure you don't need to sell a B991 to finance this purchase? :)

THE WORLD NEEDS MORE OF THESE

for that price you think it would come with a mouthpiece

for that price you think it would come with a mouthpieceThat's not what I paid for it as QuinnTheEskimo is my friend. The fellow who is gonna play it has his own set of mouthpieces and Suzy has two for her cornet. So no worries.

Update: Matt threw in a Bach 5c mouthpiece. 8-)

On a completely different tack, for whatever reason, the forum software thinks that just about anyone that posts in this thread is sp@mming the forum and thus is throwing their post into the "to be moderated" bin.

Sorry 'bout that.

I don't need to be moderated. It's a really cool horn.

Definitely interesting looking.

Now all you need is a sax-trumpet (http://www.saxpics.com/the_gallery/slideandodd/sax-trumpet/) mouthpiece.

Here's the definitive Jazzophone site (so far) discovered by our resident researcher, Helen: http://www.xs4all.nl/~marge/jazzophoneen.htm. Note that they already reference my friend Gary Anderson's Jazzophone solo at http://www.youtube.com/user/Gandalfe#p/a/u/0/E5zoWeC-rVU 8-)

Interesting foot-tapping. ;-)
(I don't mean to criticise anyone, but this sure is distracting)

Nice video, by the way.

Interesting foot-tapping.Suzy and I are working on a solution that will guarantee that foot-tapping is not so readily evident from now on. I'll post a picture when it is available.

Yeah, that is more Eddie Harris' style. No reed, no creed :P

Is it bad that I initially thought of Ed Harris, the movie star (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0000438/)?

Ed Harris really can act a variety of roles persuasively. Eddie Harris is one of my favorite musicians. So, yes, it is bad. You hurt my feelings. Besides, somehow I doubt this is the right place to get your Eds mixed up.

Dear Mr. Glass,

Schreiber & Keilwerth redirected your questions about the Toneking 3000 Jazzophon to me. I devised this instrument, which is a normal B-trompet in manner of a saxophon. It was built from 1982 to 1986. I can't tell you an exact number of items, but there where not more than 100. And as far as i know there where unfortunately no famous musicians who played it.

If you have any more questions, do not hesitate to contact me.

Best regards,

Gerhard Julius Keilwerth

Apologies for my ignorance but I don't understand the meaning. If it is not played with a reed the statement seems like an oxymoron to me, but perhaps that is just me (after subtracting "oxy"). Perhaps you could kindly elaborate.

To me, it just means that it is a standard Trumpet in Bb that has been bent be held like a saxophone - curvy mouthpipe (neck), valves to be pressed like a saxophone's keys.

I think it shouldn't be too difficult to bend a project trumpet off eBay like this. Whether or not it'd become a collector item, or only reasonably plays in tune, that I don't know.

This much I figured out. After all Gandalfe bought it. Just didn't grasp why. Hardly as obvious as a straight bari. That one went straight to the heart. I gave my teacher the 2008 sax calender and every now and then, he will start asking questions about what it is like to play, how it sounds etc, which I cannot answer because I did not have the guts to buy it.

OK, bent trumpet. From looking at the beast, I still think it screams for a reed and Eddie Harris.

Take a look. Just "one-upping" the Googling.

The Miraphone is gorgeous and waaaay too much money for a reed player. I bought the Jazzophone for my fav trumpet player to perform on. Gotta keep him happy. 8-)
