What a creative genius. That is pure musical energy. Don Menza is coming to Utah this Saturday to play with the BYU Synthesis jazz ensemble. I can't wait to hear him in person for the first time.

Menza at 72 years old is still an incredible player. His playing was simply amazing and he even did his circular breathing cadenza in spite of being at a higher altitude than he is accustomed to. The program featured his charts and arrangements as well. I had no idea he was such a skilled arranger/composer to boot. He played both concerts on a black finish Cannonball Raven tenor that the owner of Cannonball had loaned to him to try while he was here in Utah. He just might turn out to be another big name endorser for the company. We'll have to see.

Menza remains one of my favorite tenor players. His solo on Buddy Rich's CHANNEL 1 SUITE recorded at Caeser's Palace way back in '68 is one incredible flurry of notes.
