View Full Version : How to demote yourself to n00b status...

...in three easy steps:

1. Post a new thread
2. Realise that you seppled (sic) the subject wrong.
3. Click on the breakdown triangle to report your post to the moderators, asking them to edit the subject.
4. From then on, witness that your stuff is subject to moderator approval.

I don't claim it's a bug in the software. But it's interesting to know anyway. :-)

You forgot, "While the administrators point and laugh." We could also change your title to "Distinguished N00b."

:D

Don't feel bad Ben. There's someone else that this happens to. I had to fix one of their posts today. You're in good company. :)

There is something a bit whacky for sure in the settings...

Not exactly whacky, but close.

I mentioned in one of these threads that we have a plug-in that filters for post content and throws "suspect" messages into the moderator bucket. I think you tripped it by typing "MP3" in too short a message, TTT.

I'm thinking about turning that feature off. Since we moved to a registration system where you have to prove you're human by entering a word of the day -- possibly supplemented by the security updates in vBulletin 3.8.5 -- we've not had any spam problems of any kind.

The plug-in has two settings: on or off. I can't configure it, otherwise I'd make it not block "MP3" on a music forum. That's a little absurd.

Ah, the glories of checking the "Threads/Posts to be Moderated" queue.

I'll post if for discussion by the "staff."

Whatever that staff may find, fine by me. I'm not really picky, nor easily offended (well I'm working in it). I wouldn't mind the distinguished n00b title, because that's what I think I really am - the eternal student and casual seeker of the grail.
So...no crisis meeting required. Go ahead, folks, nothing to see here...

Or possibly the shades...or the combination.

Or the bass clarinet :).

It's no trouble at all. As I mentioned, I turned on the feature when we were having the mega spam problems and then never turned it off. My feeling, at the moment, is that I'm going to keep it as-is until vBulletin 3.6 (this Forum's software) comes out and then turn it off. If there aren't any spambots getting through, I'll leave it off.

O'course if vBulletin 4.1 comes out and all the problems from 4.0 have been fixed, we'll go to that, instead :).

I wanted to change my avatar picture, but the new maximum size is a tiny 50x50 pixels, that's the size of a Windows icon.

pete

Hmm. It's supposed to be bigger than that. I shall check.

It was set to 50x50. Reset to the correct 200x200.

I hadn't noticed it and nobody has mentioned it before ....

...because it only applied when you changed the avatar, and because nobody else got complaints about hats & shades. ;-)

I recently, in the last couple of weeks, changed my avatar to the gecko that I now have, and had no issues with it having to be 50x50. Strange... I don't think Pete has made any changes to the forum since I changed myself into a sax-playing gecko. Must be you Ben... :biggrin:

I decided to check out this new 200 pixel maximum avatar size. Wow! This is one big gecko now.

It can be set per usergroup. We currently have:

* Admins (that's the red usernames)
* CEs (green usernames)
* Distinguished Members (orange usernames)
* Everyone else (black usernames)

Yes, I limited the sizes at each level. I seem to remember deciding on 200 pixels for a height because that was the height of the WooF logo. The other reason to keep avatars a manageable size is because there are still some folks that don't have high-speed Internet service and lots of pictures = slow connection (if you fall into this category, check out the MOBILE style (http://www.woodwindforum.com/forums/showthread.php?t=3159)).

I think geckos eat broccoli... Especially large geckos that recently went through a rapid grow spurt... Come closer broccoli admin... Come closer.... :grin:

Is that a Skeletor sax? (I think I finally grasp what manufacturers mean with "ribbed construction")

I could make a "He Man and the Masters of the Universe" reference, but I won't :P.
