You can read about the Taragato I've recently purchased here, http://biskey7.wordpress.com/2008/01/19/tarogato-aka-tarogato-sounds-like-a-cat-being-strangled-slowly/. I'm currently using a sopranino sax mouthpiece and a number two clarinet reed to great effect.

Click on the picture in the blog post and you get a bigger picture. I need to remember to take the same shot (with keyworks featured) of the Tarogato next to a soprano sax.

I have one...an Adler in the key of 'C'. It is not in playing condition...a future project...

If it's by Adler and in C its probably a straight Octavin rather than a tarogato.

You mean this Pete? Doesn't look anything like a taragato.

There are 2 kinds. Bassoon shaped ones like that and straight ones. The straight ones are less common.

Here's a straight octavin next to a tarogato.

From Gandalfe's blog: "Tárogató (aka Tarogato), sounds like a cat... being strangled... slowly..."

How do you know this Gandalfe? Is the cat that lives with my Buescherbass still alive???

Looked for a Youtube clip to hear a Tarogato. Found one here:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Sj9wYhHrpJM

- features a fight between a cat and a big dog (dog wins).

I am - thanks. Congrats with Macy. I guess there is plenty of room inside the bell of the Buescherbass for both of them. :)

Okay...here are some photos...

The question about why I thought is was in the Key of 'C'...because it is stamped 'C' on both the upper and lower barrels.

This is what it says in an oval...

'Adler & Co.'
Markneukirchen
'C'

Actually, the letter 'C' is below the oval...

WWF Contributor 'Groovekiller' (Randy Emrick) is from Dayton Ohio as I am also, and he probably knew the guy who I bought this from...not sure if he is watching this thread or not...

Nice looking instrument. So when you play C on the instrument and C on a piano...?

It is not in playing condition so I can't comment about matching pitch with a piano...

You should post a question to the instrument museum in Markneukirchen! They could help you to identify the instrument best.
