Yes, I know. This should be an obituary, but it's not. It's a gig story.

"Duck" Dunn is gone.

Around 1972,when I was playing with the CC Riders, we played a room in Memphis on the top floor of a skyscraper. The room was round with panoramic windows, and it revolved, very slowly, once an hour. They forgot to tell us about the rotating part.

When we set up in the afternoon, the room wasn't moving. There were not many electrical outlets on stage, so we ran extension cords to outlets on the outside walls. What we were really thinking about was the show that night. We had heard that Otis Redding's backup band was coming to see us. That meant "Duck" Dunn, Steve Cropper, and Al Jackson.

The tables in the club radiated out from the bandstand in the center like spokes in a wheel. That night at showtime, the great funk players were seated right up front, a little off to the left. The Riders went into the first instrumental band tune, kicking ass and taking names. When the tune was over, I looked up and noticed that Steve, Duck, and Al were now seated directly in the middle of the room. I thought, "Geez, they moved and got better seats!" The room was now revolving but we still didn't know it.

We played another band tune and then we went into the vamp to bring up Wayne Cochran. Just then, BLONK! the power went out. The room had rotated and pulled our extension cords out of the wall jacks. After a few minutes, we fixed the problem and the show went on.

Al Jackson was stunned by Jaco Pastorius' playing and offered him a record contract. Jaco turned it down. That's another story. Al also told our drummer, Allyn Robinson "You just out Al Jacksoned Al Jackson!"

I felt really stupid that I had not realized the room had been rotating. After the show, I told Jaco, "I didn't look up for five minutes, and I thought Steve, Duck, and Al had moved over a row." Jaco said, "Heck, I didn't look up for three tunes, and I thought they split!"

[this ad] will create a lot of controversy, and some will question our credibility, some of you may even send us death threats and/or run to SOTW and post that we have no idea what we are talking about and there is no way that this is original. Before you do that, please consult with an expert on Euro SBA finishes ...

Mmmm. Well. OK.

Leaving the florid prose behind, I have not seen a horn that looks as dark this, outside of horns people have specifically tried to make look this dark, as in the case of the Cannonball "Brute" finished horns. I seem to remember reading somewhere that Cannonball does this with a mild acid. If I'm right, I'd think that it'd be possible that if you lived in a place that has a high, but not too high acid content in the air, you could replicate this in 60ish years.

It also looks kinda shiny, though. The Brute finish doesn't. I've seen them in person. A little clear lacquer, perhaps? Overly harsh lighting and/or bad camera technique?

The other thing is that the seller happens to have a Buescher C Melody he's selling that has a very simular looking finish.

What does the repair community think?

Now, 'scuse me for a moment whilst I prepare a post for SOTW :P.

I actually remember those commercials. Treat yourself to 1980s advertising goodness.

Over the past couple of months, two of my current favorite performers/groups, Andrew Bird and Gomez, have come to town. I didn't go to either performance. For the cheap seats the tickets were $37 and $25, respectively. Gomez was downtown, so that'd be an extra $5 - $10 for parking. Oh. $7 for gas, too.

I had a conversation with a cow-orker the other day. He took vacation time and traveled a couple hundred miles to see a performance from one of his favorite bands. I asked him why. Making a long conversation shorter, I ended up with him saying that yes, the music wasn't as good as on Memorex (they are still around, ya know), the audience was rowdy and it was really, really expensive. And he wasn't really sure it was worth it.

Take another look at the numbers I mentioned above: I could buy a significant portion of the entire portfolios of each performer for that price (used CDs or just the MP3s from iTunes). Plus, I can kick back in my favorite chair, put on my nice JVC headphones and have a refreshing beverage, too. The other thing is that I don't like all the songs by Andrew Bird or Gomez, but I can skip the ones I don't like when I'm at home. I would have hated to spend all that cash and had a full evening of songs I didn't care for.

Here's another thing: if I want to listen to live recordings taken from concert performances, each of the groups I've mentioned have some rather extensive live performances on audio AND video which cost ... nothing. I'm not just talking about low-quality 360p YouTubage, either. I'm talking pro recordings and FLAC audio. Just go to their websites or do some Googling -- and not for illegal 'sites. NPR and other respectable outlets have concert series online.

Is the live concert format dead and someone just forgot to tell the performers? Am I missing something?

It's a "buy it now" at $6360.

Note that the serial number (and possibly date of manufacture) have been removed from the instrument, so the seller's going off the address and saying, "Between 1878 to 1885."

There happens to be a partial list of ALL Adolphe Sax instruments here. This is a very partial list -- many of the horns I had listed at saxpics.com aren't on it -- but the fact that the serial number is missing could = instrument was stolen at some point. I wonder what you'd do about that. Obviously the seller, Wichita Band Instruments, was confident enough in the current owner of the horn to do a complete overhaul.

I would appreciate the forums input regarding double sharp accidental.

I'm currently working on a piece in key of E major. If I understand it correctly
any key signature notes containing the double sharp accidental, the already sharped note is raised one half step higher. C to D natural for example.

Any notes not containing a sharp per key signature would be raised two half steps higher. B to C natural for example.

Your critique is appreciated.
