Should I play at my Mothers funeral ?
For better or worse my mom was the one that pushed me to succeed in music and I'm very thankful for what she did.
Though not a great financial success I've had a great life so far as a musician and teacher and I feel I should play but I don't know if it's appropriate for an immediate family member to do such a thing.

Has anybody ever played for a parents funeral or seen it happen?
It may depend on the church also. This an Episcopalian church, similar to Catholic.
She joined later in life so I am not a member of the church.

I am kind of nervous since I've never taught private lessons before. I just need any and all advice from you who have been in this game longer than me :) I plan to use the blue Rubank books and as for theory I will use the first 3 Master Theory books and if the student has more of an interest I will have them continue on with the final 3.

This afternoon, the local PBS station aired what had to be the oldest Lawrence Welk episode that I have seen to date.

It was so far back (in the sponsorship by Dodge Motors days) that none of the usual suspects (Peanuts Hucko, Pete Fountain, Bob Havens, Buddy Merrill or Johnny Zell) were present. The only faces that I recognized were Aladdin, my favorite Bob Delow, the funny trumpet player who used to do Ish Kabbibl numbers (Rocky Rockwell), and (of course) the inevitable Myron Florin. Also featured was Big Tiny Little.

Instrumentation was the very light five saxes (with a bassoon and bass sax prominently displayed), three trumpets, two trombones, plus the usual heavy six man rhythm group, and the four high strings. Almost an augmented hotel orchestra from the 1930's. But, it must have taken two busses to haul them all around, what with all of the vocalists that he carried as well.

Nothing too out there in the tunes that they played. Mac The Knife was pretty current at the time, and there was a virtually unrecognizable rendition of an Elvis tune. Oh, and the lead trumpet played I've Got The World On A String with the Harmon mute with the stem kept in. That's the first time that I've ever seen someone use a stem with a Harmon.

A young Lawrence Welk did a very lively polka with one of the vocalists, and then (surprise, surprise) he played the organ while members of the audience came up, selected their favorite band member, and waltzed away to Let Me Call You Sweetheart.

I've seen old episodes before, usually with Pete Fountain in the sax section, but I have yet to see anyone pickup and/or play the bassoon or the bass sax.

I recently purchased a brand new clarinet. It's made of hard rubber and I like the instrument. The problem is that only the lower piece has a serial number. The seller says that's the only piece that's numbered and there's no problem. Seems to me that (1) if I wanted to resell, there's no way of "proving" both pieces were intended to go together, and (2) if I take it for repair and there's more than one instrument of that type, there could be an inadvertent (or intended?) switch in parts. In any case, was wondering if anyone on the board had a recommendation for me. Should I forget about it, or pursue it? If pursue it, what to request? The seller says none "of the batch" has a serial number for that part.

Hello All
I am new to the forum and am hoping I can get some advice. I recently retired and borrowed a bass clarinet
from a local music store. I played quite a bit of bass clarinet some 40+ years ago, as well as bassoon and sax(which I still play) but I do not recall having any difficulty playing above G years ago.
The horn is a cheap plastic Vito student instrument and is unbelievably stuffy above G, in fact I had no problem playing up to E.
Is it the horn or do I just have to woodshed it until the horn speaks clear?
thanks in advance

So...I Finally sold the Leblanc one piece contrabass clarinet :geezer2:now I have to ship it!!

It came to me with UPS ground in 2007 but the UPS website wouldn't let me create a shipment. It said it was too big.
On the other hand the FedX website worked and I was given a shipping price of $100 which seemed reasonable.
Anybody have any preferences for shipping?

Also ,anybody have any tips on the packing particulars?
Fortunately, I still have the box it came in, but it's really just a cardboard sheath.
It is however the way it's shipped when you buy one new so I assume it's the best way to pack it.

The case has a big open area on the side nearest the handle.
I'm wondering if I should fill it with styrofoam peanuts, paper or bubble wrap?

The box has a this end up sticker and I think it means handle side up witch means the instrument is then on the bottom and closest to the ground.
Assuming the box is in this position and the box is dropped I wonder if the instrument would take less of hit if the case was upside down and filled with styrofoam?

And finally what about the pads? I think it may have come with little cork pieces keeping the pad open.
It seems like something more like the key clamps that they have for saxophones that keep the pads closed would be better??

thanks for any help
bob
