Should I play at my Mothers funeral ?
For better or worse my mom was the one that pushed me to succeed in music and I'm very thankful for what she did.
Though not a great financial success I've had a great life so far as a musician and teacher and I feel I should play but I don't know if it's appropriate for an immediate family member to do such a thing.

Has anybody ever played for a parents funeral or seen it happen?
It may depend on the church also. This an Episcopalian church, similar to Catholic.
She joined later in life so I am not a member of the church.

This afternoon, the local PBS station aired what had to be the oldest Lawrence Welk episode that I have seen to date.

It was so far back (in the sponsorship by Dodge Motors days) that none of the usual suspects (Peanuts Hucko, Pete Fountain, Bob Havens, Buddy Merrill or Johnny Zell) were present. The only faces that I recognized were Aladdin, my favorite Bob Delow, the funny trumpet player who used to do Ish Kabbibl numbers (Rocky Rockwell), and (of course) the inevitable Myron Florin. Also featured was Big Tiny Little.

Instrumentation was the very light five saxes (with a bassoon and bass sax prominently displayed), three trumpets, two trombones, plus the usual heavy six man rhythm group, and the four high strings. Almost an augmented hotel orchestra from the 1930's. But, it must have taken two busses to haul them all around, what with all of the vocalists that he carried as well.

Nothing too out there in the tunes that they played. Mac The Knife was pretty current at the time, and there was a virtually unrecognizable rendition of an Elvis tune. Oh, and the lead trumpet played I've Got The World On A String with the Harmon mute with the stem kept in. That's the first time that I've ever seen someone use a stem with a Harmon.

A young Lawrence Welk did a very lively polka with one of the vocalists, and then (surprise, surprise) he played the organ while members of the audience came up, selected their favorite band member, and waltzed away to Let Me Call You Sweetheart.

I've seen old episodes before, usually with Pete Fountain in the sax section, but I have yet to see anyone pickup and/or play the bassoon or the bass sax.
