If often wondered if that's an indicator that the instrument was stolen?

"Stolen" sounds rather doubtful to me. It's easy enough to say that someone took the neck out of the case when he found the horn, set it someplace and lost it. If it was stolen, I'd expect serial numbers or other distinguishing marks "rubbed" off or a plate soldered over them. Not that I haven't seen either happen a few dozen times.
