Echoes of a bygone era

Thanks for posting that. I thoroughly enjoyed it!

There are a handful of bands (orchestras?) around the world that play that style (The Royal Society Jazz Orchestra from NoCal, and Dean Mora's bands from SoCal come to mind) and they are very popular. DAVE

Very nice! Lovely playing. I haven't heard playing like that outside of animation from the 30's. Much more musical than typical modern "dance bands".

That German singer WAS a hoot. The Royal Society Jazz Orchestra (Gilroy, CA) had a piano player who did vocals like that. His name was Frederick Hodges. I don't know if he is still with the RSJO, but every time he sang, the audience just loved it.

Carl, this band WAS musical, like you said. Rather than dazzling the audience with hot licks and out-of-the-box voicings, they played stuff that everyone understood. That's why I liked it so much. Loved that driving four-beat banjo along with the sousaphone. I've always thought that sousaphones in a trad band were the best set-up when a bass horn was used. Lots of ooomph. DAVE
