Instrument Care and Repair for Band Directors

Not that I'm a repairman,

Note on tape: WD-40 works. Interesting that you mention masking tape on cases, tho. I'd rather you mention to not write the kid's name on the case with permanent marker :).

With stuck swabs on non-oboes, I'd say that if the swab is stuck in the neck (sax) or upper joint (clarinet), it's a "take it to the repair guy." The swab's probably stuck on the octave key "pip" on the inside of the horn. Although, it might be interesting to try your suggestion:

Use a golf tee in the thumb hole to nudge the cloth back out the way it came in. When you can reach it, try to grip the cloth through the bottom with long nose forceps.
Additionally,

DO use ... mild heat from a hand torch ....
I've had severe lacquer damage done to my horn by a music director that tried to put in a pad on my sax with heat.

See? I read what people post!
