The Art of Playing a Ballad - Paul Desmond and Johnny Hodges

Johnny Hodges only needs to play one note and you know it's him. I really enjoy his sound. Here's two more video's.

His use of vibrato goes beyond description but pretty starts to describe it. His playing just sounds so effortless most of the time. I'm sure that's just due to playing all those years but Hodges doesn't get the level of appreciation that he really deserves within the jazz community.

I agree, maybe lots of people see him as 'one of the guys in the band'. Also the transition swing era / bebop etc. could play a role in this, I don't know. This also goes a bit for Ben Webster I think.
