Which for beginner

I am a senior woman looking to learn an instrument and am torn between a Yamaha wood 34 clarinet and a Yamaha 26 saxophone. Both are used and completely overhauled.
I’d like advice please! Thanks

Both are fabulous choices, the clarinet is a bit lighter. I always suggest selecting the instrument that has the sound you like the best. Have you gone to a music store and lifted the instrument in cases for those two instruments, that might make a difference. Both instruments take about the same amount of air to produce a decent sound, reeds cost about the same, and maintenance is about the same. Do you have friends you might play in a (sax or clarinet) quartet with? Sounds like a fun project, good luck.

Both clarinet and alto sax are excellent instruments. I learned on the clarinet in 1965 in 6th grade, then seconded on alto sax in high school for stage band.

This is merely a personal choice as to which to start on. Generally, it is a little bit easier to start on clarinet then migrate to sax, although some people have done it the other way.

Key is also getting a good mouthpiece and reed combination starting that is comfortable with you. Like @Gandalfe said, visit with a music store and handle both. It will give you an idea. The sax will be supported by neck strap.

If you never played a wind instrument before, finding a tutor and taking private lessons will help you come to playing and enjoyment quicker.
