A musical mystery

I'm posting this from our campsite at the Gulf Coast National Seashore Ft Pickens facility. It's very eery here - only three others in the two hundred odd campsites. Plenty of small tar balls too, although they clean them up as fast as they wash in.

We have our portable XM radio along, listening to a Hearts Of Space equivalent, when I recalled another sort of "space music" that I listened to, a very long time ago.

It would have been in the late 50's or early 60's. I would characterize it as being evocative of a slow ride on a riverboat on a jungle river. Instrumentation was piano and percussion only, with the occasional bird/monkey call stripped in as well. The music had very sparse and deliberate manner to it, with quasi-Latin rhythms backing it up. 4/4 time as far as I can tell.

Does anyone have any idea what this might have been? Google doesn't seem to know about this performer group, although I seem to recall that it was very popular at the time.

Typing on an iPad with the hard on-screen keyboard, is very tedious...
