Yes it is midi, but I mean to ask John what he uses to create his representations. I don't' dare use a midi version of my stuff to show to anyone because is sounds so "midi". But I think Johns are about as close as you can get. Certain things are the tell tales, and vary depending on your instrument. I didn't think the sax sounds were too bad, but there was the absence of key noise . The drum/cymbal rolls lose a bit, and a few other bits and pieces, but I think for a low profiled composer without the means (and a lot of money) to record a good ensemble it's pretty good.
Moreso, for a young composer I think his stuff is fresh, and still keeps the traditional sounds of wind ensembles. Have a listen to some of his stuff folks and remember the name John Pasternak!
