Which Tenor Recorder for a newbie?

Hello all recorder players,

I was happy to find this small forum nestled among all the other woodwind instruments.

Recently I dug a long forgotten five dollar Yamaha Soprano ABS recorder from my closet, purchased at, of all places, Staples/Business Depot, years ago.

My sense of musicality has improved somewhat over time, and I gave it a whirl. Liking the potential of what I heard, I decided to see what else is out there.

I've concluded the following:

-Soprano is a bit high pitched for my regular taste. Bass recorders are out of my price range, and tenor, in between, has a nice sound from what I've heard. I'm looking for one of those.

-I like the look (and I would guess the tactile sensation) of a wood instrument. I also gather that a Tenor recorder made of solid wood would fetch a price higher than I can justify or afford, for anything of reasonable quality. (Meaning, I can't spend much more than a hundred dollars right now).

-It seems that you can make a pretty fine instrument for most needs out of ABS, so I've looked around, and it seems down to the following two ABS models:

The very popular Yamaha YRT-304B:

The Dolmetsch - NV40:

I'm looking for something that can put out reasonable (not deafening) if necessary, but that can also be played softly and sweetly. I prefer a smoother, rounder tone opposed to a sharper, shriller tone.

Also, on this page: http://www.aswltd.com/guiderec.htm#tenor they talk about different recorders, and mention that the Yamaha 300 series has good/interesting tonal qualities, but may not have the best intonation off-the-shelf. They offer "custom tuning" to correct this.

Has anyone had experience with such a procedure? Would you deem it necessary, or not?

And my final question - can you stick a wooden mouthpiece onto a plastic bodied recorder? I don't really have a problem with ABS - and the smell/taste of new plastic bothers me, which I don't notice in the least with mine, so I assume they use well sealed, safe plastic. I just like the though of a wooden mouthpiece...but maybe that means a whole wooden instrument!

Well, thanks for your help. I look forward to your responses!

Cheers,

(Don't really have anything to contribute to your question, tho.)
