My husband and I recently bought a Buffet Prestige bass clarinet from a friend we’ve known for 30+ years. The serial number is 24897. The buffet site listing shows it as WWII vintage, but we’re sure our friend bought it new in the early 1990’s. I’ve heard that the serial number listing has been disorganized at times, so many that’s my answer, but I’d like to find out what year it was actually made - does anyone have insight into the peculiarities of the Buffet numbering system?

1991 sounds right per saxhound.
The bass clarinet serial numbers are not intermixed with the soprano clarinets, as they have their own separate list.
As such the search probably checked against the soprano clarinet serial number list to make you think it's WWII vintage.
