To revert to an earlier post, I carefully scrape off old tenon corks with a small screwdriver. it takes a minute longer but it does no harm
For removing the remaining cork shreds and glue, try this:
Dremel makes a rotary brush with plastic bristles. It is terrific for removing old glue and small amounts of old cork - fast! It is perfect for wood tenons, but heavy handed use can melt plastic tenons. Just be careful.
