Reading notation: some things are just hard to read....?

I am someone that was brought up reading "Portuguese Rapsodies" clarinet parts in an ethnic Portuguese Band (akin to Italian Band) in hand written (what's locally known as "chicken-scratch") almost illegible notation. Deciphering that notation(?) made reading normal/printed notation really easy for me at a young age.
There are still times that I run across something that I find hard to read. I just can't seem to wrap my head around it - I can play it - but I can't....... Sometimes I notate a part in a different way; if it's written in mostly flats I will convert it to sharps or vice versa.
Below is an example. 1st mvt of Suite Francaise Tenor Sax part. In this part I can't for the life of me play it as written - I've got the technique but my head gets in the way, so I Finale'd the excerpt converting it from flats to sharps.
Now I can blow through it no problem...
