Wynton...replaced Valery Ponamarev in the trumpet chair.

I heard Ponamarev with Blakey in about 1980 at Rumsey's Concerts by the Sea. He was playing a lot of Clifford licks.

So Art's band all started to dress very well.

As I recall, Blakey was wearing red overalls when I saw them.

Yeah, Valery loves Clifford. Still plays like him.

Art said that he wore those overalls to signify the hard work going on up on the bandstand. He liked to wear a powder blue cowboy suit when I knew him. And a big white ten gallon hat. He was driving a new Bentley.
